Who created DISC?

The DISC Model of Behavior was first proposed by William Moulton Marston, a physiological psychologist with a Ph.D. from Harvard.

His 1928 book, Emotions of Normal People, he explains his theory on how normal human emotions lead to behavioural differences among groups of people and how a person’s behaviour might change over time.

His work focused on directly observable and measurable psychological phenomena.

How long until I’m up to speed and using your reports?

Our Certification Training is different from most. We believe that the purpose of the training is to get you to a point where you can competently and confidently use the tools in your work. We follow the 10, 20, 70 percent learning by doing approach.

10% Teaching
20% Feedback
70% Practice

Our Certification Training takes place over 6 modules, spread typically over 12-24 weeks in small groups of 5 or 6 people. Within those modules as you work your way through the various Sciences, DISC (Behaviours), Driving Forces (Workplace Motivators). Competencies (Skills), EQ and so on, you actually practice, you actually work with 5 people that you identify.

You do these assessments the core Sciences with these people, you debrief them, work through it, combine the reports with the same 5 people right through the programme.

So that when you have completed the programme you are actually using the tools. It’s not about going on a Bootcamp and having a 3 day download, learning all the theory and then you come to the end and say ‘what do I do now?’.

This is a learning by doing so that when you come to the end of the Certification Training you have done the exams, you are a Certified Behavioural Analyst, Motivational Analyst and EQ Analyst. You are actively using the tools in your work right now.

How often should I update my DISC training?

Certification is valid for two years. Recertification is usually a half day affair highlighting updates, improvements and new understanding and application.
There is no charge for this.

Can I use DISC reports for HR?

Yes you can and I will go further than that and say you should use these reports in a wide range of HR areas. Let me explain but first let me outline the DEAP model that I’ve spoken about before. The DEAP Model is about:

  • How do I Discover Talent?
  • How do I Engage Talent once I’ve recruited someone?
  • How do I Advance Talent in terms of career and development?
  • How do I Performance Manage that talent.

Interestingly in all the research on employee engagement they talk about these things: Who am I working for and how well do I get on with my boss? Do I see and understand where this company is going? Do I see the career progression, the succession plan for me and how I’m going to get there? Am I properly performance managed? and so on….All the issues we are talking about, in engaging people and developing your Team are critical.

So what Sciences do we have and what are the advantages of a Multi-Science approach? In the whole cradle to grave Talent Management Cycle you need different Sciences to do different things.

So for example if you are coaching an individual around their Interpersonal skills you might use Behaviours (DISC) and EQ. If you are recruiting somebody you most likely use Behaviours (DISC), Workplace Motivators (Driving Forces), Skills (Competencies) and maybe Acumen Capacity (ACI) depending on how Senior the role is. In the case of Team Building and Communications you would typically use Behaviours (DISC) and typically Workplace Motivators (Driving Forces).

As you go through all the various areas in HR, Talent Management, the whole Talent Cycle, you would use these various tools to do different things.

One of the advantages of the TTI suite of tools is that we offer you “multi-science” reports, which provide integrated feedback. With this multi-dimensional view, leaders and managers are able to understand themselves and others at a much deeper level than just using a single assessment.

DEAP: So how do you Discover Talent, how do you find the right people, people who are matched to their roles? How do you Engage those people, how do you get them involved, excited, enjoying the work? How do you Advance them, career progression, succession planning? And how do you performance manage them? You can use these tools for the whole Talent Cycle.

So Recruiters, HR Directors, HR Consultants, Trainers, L&D, Coaches and Business Consultants. Anybody who is working in the Talent Management Arena needs to be using these kind of tools to give them the kind of information and resources that they require to effectively interact, make the best possible decisions and support their people/clients as they grow and develop.

What different sciences do you have?

We have a range of Sciences but there are five core Sciences that we typically talk about.

  1. DISC
  2. Motivators / Driving Forces
  3. Competencies / Skills
  4. EQ – Emotional Intelligence
  5. Acumen Capacity

The first Science, which everyone is familiar with, is behaviours or DISC. This is how you like to do things, how you interact with the world and how you like to communicate.
The second Science is Motivators or Driving Forces; what initiates that behaviour, what motivates a person to action in the first place.

The third Science is Competencies or Skills; what modifies that behaviour, what have you learned in terms of professional skills that modify that behaviour?

The fourth Science is EQ (Emotional Intelligence) which everyone is familiar with.

The fifth is Acumen Capacity, the whole idea of perception, how you think, how you filter information that you take in and how you make balanced decisions and judgements based on that.
